Stay tuned for details on the 2019 Abaco Science Fair!
About the Science Fair:
FRIENDS held our first Earth Day Science Fair in 2003. It has grown into an event in which public and private schools from across Abaco participate. The 2014 science fair theme was “Invasive Species”, which enabled FRIENDS to help raise awareness of the unique threats posed to our environment by these species and encourage students to develop creative strategies for addressing those threats.
Programs of this type, which engage and educate school children are not typically held in The Bahamas unless a third party like FRIENDS organizes them, provides the educational resources and pays for transportation. This is the best way to reach the largest amount of students about important issues and raise general awareness. In our experience, having worked in environmental education for nearly 30 years, educating children is the most effective first step in raising general community awareness.
This event is a great opportunity for Abaco’s students to showcase their knowledge of science and the environment, and it provides a forum for friendly competition to inspire students to learn more about their local environment. The science fair would not be possible without our valued sponsors and community volunteers, not to mention the dedicated teachers and students who participate.
