Virtual Science Fair 2021
Theme: Ensuring access to clean and safe freshwater for all

Due to COVID-19, FRIENDS is taking our annual Science Fair VIRTUAL! Students are encouraged to register on this page below as soon as possible. Once registered, students will receive an email with submission details. Projects may be done individually or in groups of two. All schools and students are invited to attend a virtual session that will include an informative presentation and awards.

PROJECT SUBMISSION NOW CLOSED!
Please register to join our virtual ceremonies. All are welcome!

VIRTUAL CEREMONY: Thursday November 11th

Primary school ceremony:  9:30am-10:45am and High School ceremony: 11am-12:15pm

This program is supported by The BEP Foundation, Center for Disaster Philanthropy, and the Bahamas Department of Education

BACKGROUND

Projects should show evidence of research into a topic surrounding how we can ensure access to clean, safe freshwater resources for everyone. Students should then use that research to propose an action component for their project. Although water is a renewable resource, it is limited. The limitations for access to clean and safe freshwater vary. Student projects will contribute to our knowledge and understanding of the freshwater resources available to us, how they can be utilized and/ or amplified.

Projects must be based on scientific investigations, an experiment or surveys, including environmental and/or social perspectives. All information outlining how the project was done, key findings and conclusions, should be included in a poster presentation and other media formats as you desire. We will also be looking for a proposed action component in each project that demonstrates student participation in solutions, behaviour change, or community outreach for increasing public understanding of the importance of access to clean freshwater. Due to time constraints, the action component should be described but is not required to be implemented. However, extra points will be given to those students who do undertake their proposed action component.

PROJECT GUIDELINES

No more than 4-5 paragraphs. Illustrations may be included.
Can be handwritten and scanned (must be legible), or typed.

Upper Primary (Grades 4-6) - Poster. May be done by hand and scanned or done on computer.

HIGH SCHOOL

Focus: Investigating challenges and solutions for reliable freshwater resources after a natural disaster:  Identifying the Problem, Creating a Plan, Achieving our Goal

Lower High (Grades 7-9) - Poster or 1-3 minute video.

Upper High (Grades 10-12) - Poster or 1-3 minute video.

Poster can be done by hand and scanned or done on computer. Please ensure to give credit to sources used for photos or any other information. Video open to students' creativity, but must include title of project, student name and school name and must stick to the theme.

NOTES FOR ALL ENTRANTS

You are responsible for submitting entries that are legible, audible, etc. depending on project format.

Credit your sources of information (including photos, web research, interviews etc)

You must show use of the scientific method in your project (steps listed below).

Action components should be described but are not required to be implemented before November 5th, however extra points will be awarded to those students who demonstrate proof of implementation.

SCIENTIFIC METHOD...break it down!

  1. Ask a question

  2. Do some background research

  3. Form a hypothesis (educated guess)

  4. Test your hypothesis by doing an experiment

  5. Make an observation from your experiment

  6. Analyze results and form a conclusion

  7. Report your results
