Terrestrial Parks and Preservation
Friends of the Environment has been a part of cooperative efforts with many groups in an attempt to protect and preserve our natural heritage. Over the years, much influence has been placed on the marine environment, but FRIENDS is committed to making sure that other habitats are also in the spotlight.
The terrestrial environment of Abaco is unique in that it houses many ecosystems: mangroves, marshland, pine forest and coppice. Abaco is also home to the endangered Bahama Parrot and is a stop along the migratory route of many North American birds. FRIENDS was instrumental in the creation of the Abaco National Park (ANP), a protected area under the designation of the Bahamas National Trust. Since the parks inception in 1994, FRIENDS has assisted in efforts to document Bahama Parrot behavior, has aided in starting a fire maintenance program, and is currently developing a protocol for removal of invasive species. Most recently, FRIENDS has been involved in the drafting of a General Management Plan for the ANP. FRIENDS also hosts the annual Christmas Bird Count, which takes place in south Abaco.
