Friends of the Environment

Abaco, Bahamas

2007 Summer Environmental Camps for Kids

This summer Friends of the Environment offered summer camps in southern, central and northern Abaco communities, as well a traveling camp that visited the outer cays - Man-O-War, Green Turtle Cay and Moore's Island. Over 100 students had the opportunity to learn about the Abaco environment and take field trips to experience it first hand.

The camps were based on the successful Sandy Point Environmental Camp (SPEC) that was started in 2003 by the Bahamas Marine Mammal Survey - now known as the Bahamas Marine Mammal Research Organization (BMMRO).

SPEC was created to provide constructive and interactive summer activities for Sandy Point children with the aim of increasing environmental awareness in The Bahamas. Some of you may have been following the progress of SPEC over the years. The children of Sandy Point have learned to kayak; snorkel, and in some cases swim; pitch a tent and identify constellations; identify native and invasive plants, and join researchers in collecting data on local Bottlenose Dolphins.

As part of FRIENDS burgeoning education program they have partnered with Bahamas Marine Mammal Research Organization to expand the Sandy Point Environmental Camp model throughout Abaco.

All camp activities were designed to highlight the local environment and to teach new outdoor skills. They were day camps, sessions ran from 9 am - 12 p.m., and were open to youth living in Abaco who have pre-registered for the camp.
