Earth Day 2008

Earth Day started on April 22, 1970 by people wanting to validate the importance of the environment and set aside a day to take action for the future.

In Abaco, area schools participate in forum creating projects around the annual theme. This year's theme was " Parks and Protected Area".

Green Bags

Green Bags” are an environmentally friendly alternative to plastic bags. They are made of non-woven polypropylene (NWPP). This program has been created to benefit Abaco’s environment and reduce harmful trash and litter. This program has already achieved great success throughout Europe and FRIENDS hopes to be a model for bringing the program to the Bahamas.

International Coastal Cleanup 2007

Originally started in 1987, the concept of an International Coastal Clean up was to engage people to remove trash for the world's beaches and waterways and then identify the source of the debris and then initiate behavioral changes to decrease these types of pollution. Abaco's schools, service groups, church groups and group of friends once again participated in this years International Coastal Cleanup through out the month of September cleaning up and tabulating their finds. Abaco's data will be added to the world wide tally to help recognize and help to solve the worlds pollution problem.

Recycling Efforts in Abaco

Recycling efforts in Abaco started with the recycling of aluminum cans in 2006 and is growing by leaps and bounds. With the combined efforts of Friends of the Environment and Bahamas Tourism and area businesses, what is and can be recycled in Abaco is becoming a recycling reality. Efforts are being made to recycle cans, batteries, oil, cars and aluminum as well as the introduction environmentally friendly containers
