In order to help protect coral reefs from unnecessary damage, FRIENDS and local volunteers partner with the Bahamas National Trust to maintain moorings at popular reefs in Abaco’s National Marine Parks: Sandy Cay Reef and Fowl Cay Reef, and independently maintains moorings at Mermaid Reef.
The moorings are rated for boats up to 25 feet in length. We recommend that you dive the mooring to check that it is sound before you swim away from your boat. Ultimately, you are responsible for your boat! Moorings are provided free of charge. If you see a damaged mooring at one of the reefs mentioned above please contact FRIENDS. You can also refer to the FRIENDS Mooring Brochure.
Here are some helpful tips from NOAA on mooring your boat!
