Great Abaco Island is only one of 700 islands, cays and rocks in The Bahamas archipelago. The islands cover nearly 100,000 square miles, of which, approximately 95% is water. Our country relies on its marine environment for sustenance, employment and tourism, and because of this it is critical that we preserve it. Not only is the sea important to our way of life, but The Bahamas is one of the most beautiful places to dive and snorkel in the world!
FRIENDS has been actively educating the public about our marine environment and fishing regulations since the 1980’s. Over the years, FRIENDS has increased public awareness on subjects that include long-line fishing, pollution and reef degradation.
FRIENDS recognized the importance of our coral reefs and partnered with Reef Relief (Key West, FL) to place mooring buoys at all of the popular snorkel and dive sites in Abaco. The moorings serve a vital function in protecting our coral reefs from anchor damage and are maintained annually by volunteers.
In 2005, we became a part of a large creek restoration program which was spearheaded by Dr. Craig Layman (Yale University, Florida International University). The initial stages of the restoration at Cross Harbour, South Abaco, have been completed and we will be integrating further data collection with the education program

Abaco is one of 5 areas in the Bahamas being proposed for a Marine Protected Area in the Bahamas. The location that they are considering in Abaco is around the area of Old Robinson's Bight, just west of Little Harbour on Great Abaco.
