FRIENDS has calculated that over 8 million plastic bags are given out from stores in Central Abaco every year. These bags can take between up to 1,000 years to break down in the environment. In the marine environment plastic bag litter is lethal, killing fish, turtles, marine mammals, and whales. Millions of plastic bags end up as litter on our beaches, streets and communities; they block drains and trap birds. Not all of this litter is deliberate. Much of it is wind borne litter escaping from our landfills and trash cans.. | ||||||||

To address this issue FRIENDS is now importing Green Bags to Abaco to reduce the use of the plastic “thank you” bags that stores currently use.

“Green Bags” are an environmentally friendly alternative to plastic bags. They are made of non-woven polypropylene (NWPP). NWPP is lighter than polyester and nylon, but is still far stronger and sturdier than both. NWPP is water repellent, machine washable and also has excellent air permeability. The bags are 100% recyclable, totally reusable and they have the packing and carrying capacity of 3-4 plastic bags, which will eliminate thousands of harmful bags over their life span. | ||

This program has been created to benefit Abaco’s environment and reduce harmful trash and litter. This program has already achieved great success throughout Europe and FRIENDS hopes to be a model for bringing the program to the Bahamas. Complaints about litter in Abaco are rising on tourist surveys, FRIENDS believes the Green Bag program will be a major step forward to combating this issue and making Abaco a cleaner, more healthy environment for all of us to enjoy.
