Alternative Native Trees and Shrubs

There are many native trees and shrubs that would be a great alternative to using the invasive plants such as the Hawaiian Seagrape, Brazilian Pepper and the Australian Pine that we as homeowners, business owners, and developers can use.

Our own native Sea Grape (Coccoloba uvifera) and the Silver or Green Buttonwood (Conocarpus erectus) are good alternatives.

Some other plants to consider are the Thatch Palm, the salt tolerant variety of the Cocopalm, Necklace Pod and the Bay Cedar. For beautiful flowers and salt tolerance, consider the Geiger Tree and the Bahamian National flower, the Lignum Vitae. For beach front planting, Sea Oats and other native plants such as Sea Ox-Eyed Daisy and Spider Lily make great plantings.
