FRIENDS first held their first Earth Day Science Fair in 2003. It has grown into an event in which all schools in Abaco participate, with approximately 400 students attending. The 2011 science fair theme is “Fresh Water Resources” which will enable FRIENDS to raise awareness of the need to conserve our fresh water resources.
Programs of these type, which engage and educate school children are not held in The Bahamas unless a third party like FRIENDS organizes them, provides the educational resources and pays for transportation. This is the best way to reach the largest amount of students about this important issue and raise general awareness. In our experience, having worked in environmental education for nearly 25 years, is that educating children is the most effective first step in raising general community awareness.
